See where your taxes go.

Understand how assessed value and local taxing bodies shape a property-tax bill. This historical example covers Joliet Township in 2023.

Start with assessed value

Property taxes are based on assessed value and the combined rates of the taxing bodies serving a property. Schools, municipalities, fire districts, and county services can each appear on a bill.

A historical illustration

The original AIM example uses a $250,000 home and an equalized assessed value of $83,333, with a stated combined rate of 8.2918% and an approximate tax bill of $6,907.

Rates and exemptions vary by property and tax year.
